Vol. II, No. 4

October 2001

We are proud to announce...

We are now AAHA Certified!

What does AAHA certified mean to you?  The American Animal Hospital Association is AAHA.  It tells you, the client, that we have been certified because our veterinarians have a commitment to the highest standards of veterinary care and show concern for preventive medicine.

We had to meet standards for hospital service and facilities in 12 specific areas.  A practice consultant visited our hospital and thoroughly evaluated our facilities and procedures to be sure we comply with their high standards. All AAHA hospitals voluntarily meet or exceed the association's standards and we will be regularly evaluated in the future by AAHA consultants to assure continuing compliance.  AAHA hospital members are truly distinctive in providing the highest quality care for pets.   AAHA standards are recognized around the world as the benchmark for quality care in veterinary medicine.

The entire Acre View Crew is dedicated to maintaining this high level of service and care for you and your pets.

We will review, in greater depth, the twelve specific areas of compliance in our December Newsletter.

ProHeart 6

Need a little help remember your monthly heartworm treatments? - Introducing EASY Heartworm Protection for your dog!!!

ProHeart 6 is a new sustained release heartworm protection that relieves you of the problem of remembering to give your dog a tablet or meaty chunk once a month.  ProHeart 6 is a simple and easy injection given under the skin and lasts a full six months.  No more pills, chunks, or little snackers to remember, (or forget).   In just a single dose your best friend will be protected from a deadly heartworm infection for a full six months.

We can use ProHeart 6 in dogs (no cats) six months of age and older.   It prevents heartworm disease and is also effective against the canine hookworm.   It is generally very well tolerated with a rare itching or transient swelling at the injection site.  If we do a heartworm test before we give the injection and at your first return visit, Fort Dodge will warrant the product for 100% efficacy.  They will pay for any treatment should your dog get heartworm disease while remaining current on injection being given regularly every six months.

We, at Acre View, will send you a reminder in six months to have your friend come in for another injection.  If you would like, we can call to remind you when it is due.  How simple can that be???

Cat Nip Corner/Canine Corner

The Origin of Pets

A newly discovered chapter in the Book of Genesis has provided the answer to "Where do pets come from?"

Adam and Eve said, "Lord, when we were in the garden, you walked with us everyday.  Now we do not see you any more.  We are lonesome here, and it is difficult for us to remember how much you love us."

And God said, "No problem! I will create a companion for you that will be with you forever and who will be a reflection of my love for you, so that you will love me even when you cannot see me.  Regardless of how selfish or childish or unlovable you may be, this new companion will accept you as you are and will love you as I do, in spite of yourselves."

And God created a new animal to be a companion for Adam and Eve.

And it was a good animal.

And God was pleased.

And the new animal was pleased to be with Adam and Even and he wagged his tail.

And Adam said, "Lord, I have already named all the animals in the Kingdom and I cannot think of a name for this new animal."

And God said, "No problem.  Because I have created this new animal to be a reflection of my love for you, his name will be a reflection of my own name, and you will call him DOG."

And Dog lived with Adam and Eve and was a companion to them and loved them.

And they were comforted.

And God was pleased.

And Dog was content and wagged his tail.

After a while, it came to pass that an angel came to the Lord and said, "Lord, Adam and Eve have become filled with pride.  They strut and preen like peacocks and they believe they are worthy of adoration.  Dog has indeed taught them that they are loved, but perhaps to well."

And God said, "No problem! I will create for them a companion who will be with them forever and who will see them as they are.   The companion will remind them of their limitations, so they will know that they are not always worthy of adoration."

And God created CAT to be a companion to Adam and Eve.

And Cat would not obey them.  And when Adam and Eve gazed into Cat's eyes, they were reminded that they were not the supreme beings.

And Adam and Eve learned humility.

And they were greatly improved.

And God was pleased.

And Dog was happy.

And Cat didn't care one way or the other!!!

National Veterinary Technician Week

October 14 - 20, 2001 is "National Veterinary Technician Week".  Veterinary Technicians are care givers whose love for animals has motivated them to pursue an education.  Whether this is formal or on-the-job training, they are prepared to be veterinary health care team members with the responsibility of caring for your animals.  This year's theme is "Veterinary Technicians Speak the Language", and it focuses on the ability "Vet-Techs" have to communicate with their animals patients.  A good tech is an invaluable member of our team and truly does communicate with our patients.  Many times a soothing pat on the head, a snuggle or a soft reassuring voice can set the stage for an easy examination and treatment as opposed to a battle royale and a very frightened patient.

We would like to extend a special thanks to our two great technicians, Michael Johnson and Chris Powell, for their day to day care-giving and compassion.  Without them, we would be lost.

Michael has been with us almost two years.  He was born in Duncan, OK and graduated from Empire High School.  He joined the U.S. Navy and served for nine years.  He is currently attending UCO, working on his basic requirements.   He is an undecided major but we hope he will become interested in a science major and work with us here at Acre View until he retires about 25 years from now.  Michael is trained in CPR and is a Medical First Responder so we feel better for ourselves if an emergency should happen. Just knowing Michael can care for both four-legged as well as two-legged critters is a comfort.  His hobbies are golfing and watching movies on his new DVD player for relaxation.

Chris is a certified Veterinary Technician from Ada, OK.  He joined the Acre View staff in April.  He says he is "Grateful to be a part of such a caring and supportive group of people."  After attending East Central University in Ada, he graduated from Murray State College in Tishomingo, Oklahoma with a degree in Applied Science and Veterinary Technology.  He was employed by Oklahoma State University in small animal anesthesia for one year and has been in small animal practice for the past 10 years.  Chris enjoys training horses, barrel racing and spending time with family and friends.  He is a very talented and caring young man.   He too will retire from Acre View in about 20 years if we get a vote.
