Exotic Care at Acre View
"Nontraditional" pets have become
very popular
and
they, as much as our dogs and cats, are valued family members and far
from "throw-away pets". We are happy to counsel with new exotics owners
about diet, husbandry and common disease related to any new exotic pet.
Rodents and rabbits are by far the most popular exotic pets. In general,
husbandry is so very important for both the day to day comfort of the
pet as well as its longevity. One example is that rodents are
thigmotrophic; they prefer an environment that provides close physical
contact. However, overcrowding can lead to other problems, so good
balance is important. Some may not think hay is important for rabbits,
chinchillas
and
guinea pigs but it definitely is. Hay as part of the diet is
important for good tooth maintenance as well as GI stasis. It can help
eliminate hairballs. Ferrets are not small cats and should not be
fed cat or kitten food. Keeping abreast on the latest information
and recommendations regarding exotics is our business and we take it
seriously.
* We do not see birds,
primates, reptiles, amphibians,
pot bellied pigs, fish or
wildlife.
